My Father's Legacy
A RESOLUTION ACKNOWLEDGING THE SERVICES AND CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE LATE MARCOS A. PIANO, JR. TO BARANGAY STA. RITA AND THE CITY OF OLONGAPO AS AN OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY LEADER, EXEMPLARY BASE EMPLOYEE, SBMA VOLUNTEER, AND A MODEL FATHER
WHEREAS, Marcos A. Piano, Jr. peacefully passed away last Sunday, February 26, 2012 at the age of 78 due to a lingering illness;
WHEREAS, a native of Mandurriao, Iloilo City, the late Marcos Piano, Jr. migrated to Olongapo in the mid 50s, secured a job at the Subic Naval Base, raised a family, invested in small businesses, and eventually served as volunteer Purok Leader in the former Rivera Subdivision which is now known as Begonia Street in Barangay Sta. Rita;
WHEREAS, in the late 60s – early 70s, he became a Community Leader in Purok Tres during the time of former Mayors Amelia J. Gordon and Geronimo B. Lipumano, and in the 80s, was appointed Purok Leader under the administration of Mayor Richard Gordon. He served as Kagawad of Barangay Sta. Rita for two and a half years under Mayor Kate Gordon;
WHEREAS, Marcos Piano, Jr. received numerous awards and citations as an outstanding base employee during his stints with the Public Works Center and the Office of the Provost Marshall, K9 Branch, and at one point received commendation for bravely shooting it out with armed robbery gang at the George Dewey High School inside the American naval facility;
WHEREAS, Marcos Piano, Jr. promoted sports and physical fitness by encouraging the city’s youth and base employees to take part in sports activities, himself having excelled as a firearm shooter, swimmer, self-defense expert, boxing trainer/coach, and baseball player;
WHEREAS, “Mang Jun” as dearly referred to by his friends, was a model father who raised his five children to become responsible citizens who stand out in their chosen professions and two of them followed his footsteps as a public servant;
His eldest son Danny Piano is currently the president of the Subic Bay Freeport Chamber of Commerce (SBFCC) and a professor in the graduate courses at the University of the Philippines Extension Program in Olongapo. His second son, the incumbent City Councilor Eduardo Piano, graduated from a Filmmaking Program at the prestigious Moscow Film Institute (VGIK) as a scholar of the city government and later on joined the faculty of the University of the Philippines’ Film Institute in Diliman, Quezon City. Former City Councilor Edwin Piano, having served as City Councilor for nine years, was awarded by the Philippine Jaycees as one of the Outstanding Councilors of the Philippines in 2010. He was a distinguished employee at the SRF and PWC, Subic Naval Base, and presently heads the city’s Skills Training Center. Daughter Lita Piano-Warlen, an optometrist, established together with her ophthalmologist-husband an eye center in San Diego, Ca., U.S.A. Another daughter, Lorna Piano-Clobes, works as a head nurse in the Cardio Department of the Southwest Washington Medical Center (SWMC) in Vancouver, Washington State;
WHEREAS, Marcos Piano, Jr. inspired his wife, Rosita Piano, to involve herself in public service and served as Kagawad of Barangay Sta. Rita for 13 long and productive years;
WHEREAS, Marcos Piano, Jr., being a good-provider husband and father, was one of the original Overseas Filipino Workers who participated in the first-ever airport construction of Saigon airport during the Vietnam War. He also worked in Saudi Arabia and Guam, USA;
WHEREAS, Marcos Piano, Jr. was one of the original Subic volunteers having offered not only his personal service but also the use of his truck and other vehicles to help pursue the goal of Chairman Richard Gordon to transform Subic into a bustling Freeport;
WHEREAS, Olongapo may not be Marcos Piano, Jr.’s original hometown, but he turned out as a model Olongapo citizen who loved the city and served the community selflessly;
NOW, THEREFORE, with the unanimous accord of the Members of the Sangguniang Panlungsod present;
RESOLVED, AS IT IS HEREBY FURTHER RESOLVED, by the Sangguniang Panlungsod in session assembled to Acknowledge, as it hereby acknowledges the Service and Contributions of the late Marcos Piano, Jr. to Barangay Sta. Rita and the City of Olongapo as an Outstanding Community Leader, Exemplary Base Employee, SBMA Volunteer, and a Model Father.
